Michael Cooper - December 2018

Lazy Dog "Blown Away" Gewürztraminer 2018 (4.5*)

Already enjoyable, the attractive 2018 vintage  was estate-grown at Queensberry - midway between Cromwell and Wanaka - and fermented and lees-aged in 'pre-loved' barrels. Pale, mouthfilling and finely balanced, it is clearly
varietal, with strong pear and lychee flavours, a hint of apricot and distinctly spicy notes. A very harmonious wine with a touch of complexity and a dryish finish (9 grams/litre residual sugar), it should reward cellaring.

Queensberry Gardens Chenin Blanc 2018 (4.5*)

Well worth cellaring, the 2018 vintage was estate-grown at Queensberry - midway between Cromwell and Wanaka- and lees-aged in barrels. Light lemon/green, it is a medium-bodied, vibrantly fruity wine, with vigorous, peachy, citrusy, appley flavours, showing very good varietal character, and a dryish (9 grams/litre residual sugar), lengthy finish. Best drinking mid-2020+.

The LazyDog "Sweet on Chenin" Chenin Blanc/Gewürztraminer Blend (4*)

From "later harvest" grapes, the 2018 vintage (4*) was estate-grown at Queensberry - midway between Cromwell and Wanaka - and fermented in 'pre-loved' barrels. Pale lemon/green, it is very fresh and vibrant, with gentle sweetness (70 grams/litre residual sugar), strong, citrusy, spicy flavours, a hint of apricot, and a finely balanced, crisp finish. Already delicious, it should be at its best 2020+.
