Chris (& wife Jenny) Hill.
After working in the construction industry for most of his life and growing a medium-sized electrical contracting business with 20 employees in New Plymouth, Chris wanted a change of lifestyle, as did his wife Jenny.
(who pursues an increasingly rewarding career as a mixed media and textile artist, alongside her vineyard duties!)
After buying the vineyard, Chris completed a two-year distance learning diploma in winemaking and viticulture at EIT in Hawke’s Bay. His focus is on the vineyard itself and he is involved in all the day-to-day activities of managing Locharburn vineyard, now with his son Nathan working alongside.
We met Chris and wife Jenny Hill in 2008 and quickly realized our two ventures were complementary.
Chris took on the role of viticulture consultant & together he and Jenny have been our mentors in the grape growing world for the last 14 years, starting with our first professional lesson in pruning back in the winter of 2009.
As at 2020 Chris continues his role as viticulture consultant and has extended this to a formal training/assessor role as the Harker's plough their way through their formal training in Viticulture with Primary ITO.
The two business continue to work side by side. Chris provides the consulting, training, tractor work, and LazyDog provides the tasting venue for both company's wines, as well as a flexible workforce for Locharburn Estates during the crunch times out in the vineyard.
